Matties History
The Meeting House stands at the crossroads of Cairncastle village in Co. Antrim, almost halfway between Larne and Glenarm and one mile inland from Ballygally.
The history of our traditional country pub and restaurant goes back in time to at least the 1800’s. The 1960’s and 70’s saw Martha Moore, known as Mattie, take over the reins. She was a formidable woman and many a story has been told of how she ran the pub, people she served and those she didn’t!
Locally the pub became known as ‘Matties’ and this was officially added to the title of the pub in 2007, becoming ‘Matties Meeting House’.
Matties Today
Current Licensee Martha Davis took over in 2012 but was no stranger to Matties. Martha started working in Matties Meeting House as a young woman in July 1997 and through the years she has become well known to locals and visitors alike.
Martha has preserved features like the old Singer Sewing Machine tables and the original Bar, where they once cut tobacco. With the help of her husband Alan, Martha has managed to rejuvenate Matties while retaining the original character of the traditional Public Bars.
As well as being one of the oldest traditional Public Houses in the Larne area, Matties Meeting House offers great home cooked food at affordable prices. We provide a good range of Vegetarian dishes. Many of our dishes are Gluten Free or a Gluten Free version is available.
Some old favourites are enjoyed by our customers, including the famous Boxer Jim’s Guinness Pie, Mattie’s Chicken & Smokey Burgers. Some popular recent additions to the menu include Chicken Curry, Steak Sandwich, 3 Bean Chilli and the mighty Texan Burger. As well as our daily bar food menu, we have a delicious Sunday Roast on every week.
